Military Bolt

Why do most countries still service bolt-action sniper rifles?

Now that there are semi-automatic sniper rifles out there, why do a majority of militaries around the world still service bolt-action sniper rifles? It has been proven that semi-auto rifles can outshoot, if not match, the older rifles in both range and accuracy. Primary examples would be the British L96A1, the American M40A1, The Canadian/Australian Parker Hale, etc.

The global weapons trade is multi billion $ business of which the US is currently at the forefront.
According to the FAS's Arms Sales Monitoring Project: "Since 1990, the United States has exported more than $152 billion worth of weapons to states around the world. Many of these sales have been to repressive and/or unstable governments. This section provides general arms sales statistics and highlights policies of concern in some of America's major client states". http://fas.org/asmp/?gclid=CJ7E9YzwsIwCFQm8QAodog_pJQ

Many other countries including Russia and various European and old East-Block countries deal in weapons. Even African countries like South-Africa still does, but on a much smaller scale. Slovakia has a factory that produces the majority of AK-47 and AK-74 Kalashnikovs, which is sadly used especially in conflicts all over Africa.

As technology changes over time, so do the weapons. This causes a surplus in many weopon stocks, which surplus has to be cleared. And this is the "bottom line"...

Bolt action "sniper" rifles (or high velocity telescopic rifles) are simply mostly old equipment for resale in the world of armsdealing. It's mostly Developing Countries that would buy them at reduced prices, just like any other older weoponry.

ALSO, due to the nature of the role (or function) of a sniper rifle, whether it is a bolt or semi-auto rifle, will sometimes be of small significance as a sniper will usually move to a new location after the first or maybe second shot, except where supported by his own units. That is why a silenced rifle (which is mostly semi-auto) is far more practical, yet is new technology and used only by the modernised forces.

Accuracy has very little to do with it in the end in terms of the heat of the barrel. Again, one has to look at the ROLE for which is was designed!

It is a simple matter of old stock that needs to be sold (at profit usually) by the countries which manufactured them and which stock is now simply outdated technology. The purchasing countries or groups usually do not manufacture their own brand due to various political, economical or scientific reasons.
