Sling Shot
Where can I find building instructions for a simple sling shot?
Wow, I could show you in five minutes, but I'll try to write it:
1) spread your index and middle finger apart as far as they will go, like a "peace" sign or victory sign. That's the angle you want the branches of your slingshot.
2) go find a tree. Take the saw blade of your Swiss Army Knife or a pair of pruning shears with you. Look for a place where a sturdy branch as big around as the lower knuckle of your thumb splits in two and the angle of the split is the same as the angle of your peace sign, and the two branches are about as big around as your index finger. Cut the main stem 6 inches below the split and the two branches six inches above the split. Cut off any extra sprouts from your "Y" shaped piece of wood.
3) Get hold of an inner tube, and cut a strip about an inch wide and 20 inches long. That's your sling.
Lay one loose end of the strip along one branch of your slingshot, with the loose end at the split and the rest of the strip hanging off the end of the branch. Hold it in place at the end of the branch with a rubber band while you work. Now lay a loop of rubber around the end of the branch, hold it in place with your left thumb, stretch it tight, and start wrapping in the direction from the end toward the split. Tightly wrap an inch or so of the end of the branch, ending by making a knot (see below number 6 for one knot you could use to tie it off).
If your slingshot will take a lot of wear, wrap the rubber neatly in cotton twine and tie it off tightly.
4) now take the other free end of your rubber strip, form a "U" shaped loop about 10 to 12" long, and hold the rubber against the second branch about an inch down from the end, with the loose end hanging off the end of the branch this time. Repeat the wrapping process, wrapping the last inch of the second branch, this time in the direction from the split to the end. This should leave you a "sling" or loop of about 10 to 12 inches of rubber. Test the slingshot. If it's too hard to pull, undo the second branch and re-wrap it leaving yourself a bit more slack. If it's too loose and sloppy to pull, unwrap the second branch, cut off a bit of the rubber strip, and re-wrap. When the sling is the right length, and the two ends of the rubber loop emerge from under the wrapping at the same distance from each branch end, tie off the second branch end, and wrap with twine.
5) Only when you have the slingshot so it will shoot properly, should you proceed with finishing the wood. You should do as little or as much decoration as you like, paying particular attention to smoothing the spots that chafe your left hand when you are drawing the slingshot. (It's easier to use it and see for yourself which parts need to be smooth than for me to try to explain it in an email!)
6) About that knot: hold the secured end in your left hand, and the loose end in your right hand so you can see your palm. Turn your right hand palm down, to form a loop in the rubber strip. Pass that loop over the end of your branch and stretch it tight. It should hold. Now take the loose end in your right hand again, and once again turn your hand palm down to form a loop. Pass it over the end of the branch, stretch the rubber strip and snug it down well. It should hold. Now wrap and tie tightly with twine.
