How do I know if it's a real circus vintage poster? Barnum and Bailey?
I really what this Barnum and Bailey clown troupe displays, but it seems that it is faded blue. Is it possible that I do not know if it's a reproduction or not? Here's a link to photos of it:% http://dl.dropbox.com/u/111877/circus 20poster.jpg Thanks in advance
Size is the first clue to whether or not a poster is original. The majority of posters are a collection of sheet (28 inches by 42 inches) or half-sheet. But signs also come in large format - three leaves, six leaves, nine sheets, 16 sheets, 20 sheets, 28 sheets and many other formats. One of the most ambitious ever was Buffalo Bill's Wild West, a gigantic 108-sheet panel. The majority of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey reproductions can be easily identified by their size of about 20 by 18 inches and all wear the P-prefix on one of their margins. The paper is also a good way to tell if it's wrong. Will he seek new white mint? Or is the thick paper when it must be thin or vice versa. In 1976, the 105th edition of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Program began advertising posters of 23 ½ ¼ inches by 36 inches. Sometimes they were advertised as 2 feet by 3 feet. Many were the same images as sold before, only the size was greater. This is when your poster Clown was done (P-24-124 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey - Seven Heads Clown). So really the only thing I can tell you is check the size of the poster, which should be 23 ½ inches by 36 ¼ inches. It seems real to me, but there are signs bootleg out there that fool even the best experts.
